"It was nice and sunny. I waited until the warmest part of the day. It was only 7 degrees this morning. I wore snow shoe attachments on my sneakers, made it a little weird. But they work very well." Race Pictures

"Mostly power-walked with a bit of jogging. I found out our treadmill's top speed is 5.0. Filmed some vlog content and watched some recent family vlogs during the run in our new workout zone! I wasn't really planning on doing this one, but I had some extra time and thought I'd do it in case I decided to do all of the others. I just took it really easy since I haven't done much cardio in a while."

"Calves were tight after not running for two weeks!"

"I waited until the last possible moment to do this race because I've been sick for the last few days. I'm still very congested, so the toughest obstacle was getting enough oxygen. I made it about 2.5 easy miles before, suddenly, my body nearly completely shut down. It felt like I just ran out of any more calories to burn. I took it a little easier until my oxygen level could catch up and was able to finish with a bit of a kick."

"This was potentially a very damaging race for my knee. I've been having issues with my knee since the last race, but it hasn't healed and I pushed it a little too hard on this race. It was in pain starting at 1 mile and progressively got worse as I went. At about 2.5 miles I had a sharp pain up my leg that lingered until the end of the race" :(

Race Reports
New Years 1/1/22
Kevin:
RACE #1 - New Year's Weekend: Started nicely on a nine-week training plan for the Valentine's race in February. Was excited when that turned into a monthly yearlong series, but not so thrilled that the New Year's race meant only about three weeks to train. Then a cold sidelined me through Christmas after just 10 days of that training, allowing just three more days of light training prior to New Year's Eve.
I had been hoping for a time somewhere around last Thanksgiving's family turkey trot (25:12) for the February race, so was shooting for a bit slower (around an 8:20 mile pace) for this race. I wasn't sure if I was up to that on New Year's Day after playing a show the night before and considered waiting until Sunday. The snowy 5-degree weather didn't help to motivate me either, but it did confirm the decision that this race would be run on a treadmill.
After shoveling the snow from our driveway Saturday evening, I felt "warmed up" and somewhat surprisingly motivated to get this done actually on New Year's Day, so I drove to Lifetime Fitness Club and hit the treadmill. I selected a tour of trails in Germany to follow on the video in honor of the Ruanes who had just gotten home from there the night before.
Started off on the slow side at around 8:40 for the first mile, then used a faster second mile of around 8:00 to average out at that 8:20 pace. Kept around that average for the final 1.1 mile for a finishing time of 25:54. The treadmill somehow calculated this to an 8:27 pace, but I'm going with the more mathematically accurate 8:21.3.
I don't know if I would have been able to run that pace outside, as the treadmill definitely helped, so we'll see if I can beat it in February.

Valentine's 2/13/22
Kevin:
RACE #2 - Valentine's Weekend: I've been excited about this entire race series but was definitely not as prepared for the Valentine run as I was for the New Year run, so I was really more stressed than excited leading up to this morning. Running this one in person and having friends join us also added to both the excitement and the nervousness.
Once we got started, though, I settled in to a comfortable pace and was glad to find I had dressed pretty much perfectly for the 25 degree weather. I hadn't really prepared for that either but pieced together layers of clothing and gloves at the last minute that worked out nicely.

Didn't wear my watch, so I don't know my splits, but I'm not disappointed with the average 8:53ish pace. Slower than the last race, but with running outside rather than on a treadmill, freezing temps, and limited training, I'm glad to have been sub-9 today.
